Puerto Rico advance to match against Mexico
MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 25, 2010 – Puerto Rico advanced to a
decisive match against Mexico for the top position in Pool B of
the men’s volleyball tournament at the XXI Central American and
Caribbean Games by defeating Trinidad & Tobago 3-0 (25-11,
25-20, 25-21) on Sunday.
Enrique Escalante led Puerto Rico with 9 points while Victor
Rivera, Roberto Muñiz and Hector Soto each recorded 7 tallies.
Trinidadian Nolan Tash scored a match-high 12 points and Marc
Honore added 8.
“We played with a lot of intensity and less errors than the day
before,” Puerto Rico’s coach Carlos Cardona said. “We are in a
transition period with changes in our game so we still need to
adjust. Mexico is a good team with experience and youth and they
are also in a process of change in their game.”
“Their experience of Puerto Rico and the noisy crowd were
factors,” Barbados’ coach Gideon Dickson commented. “We hit the
ball hard but the defense of Puerto Rico was committed and they
did a great job with a lot of discipline.”
